4 ways to be a healthier teacher this year

It’s no secret that teaching is a profession that exposes instructors to germs. In fact, studies indicate that teaching is the “germiest” job of all, and as a result, teachers who want to remain healthy throughout the year need to develop strategies that will help them do so.

These four behaviors will support a healthy immune system and keep you sneeze-free until summer:

1. Give Back to Your Students

If you’re serious about being as healthy as possible this year, consider the value of giving back to your students. As psychological reports about giving have already demonstrated, people who give regularly are happier and healthier.

When you start thinking about the type of present to give your students, consider the value of student planners. To succeed academically, students need to organize their school, home, and social lives. Planners help simplify this process.

2. Watch Your Diet

The single most important factor that contributes to or detracts from your health is your diet. There is still much contention regarding which diet is most effective for promoting optimal wellness; however, most nutritionists and doctors agree that a balanced diet with all the vital macro- and micronutrients is the healthiest meal plan.

Be sure to populate your grocery list with plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean meats and whole grains. Stay away from trans fats, and limit your consumption of saturated animal fats. A balanced diet not only will help you avoid illness, but it will also boost your mood and provide the energy you need to be an effective teacher.

There are numerous ways to make positive changes to your daily diet. One simple yet effective technique is to replace a morning cup of coffee with a green smoothie filled with nutrient-dense ingredients such as spinach, bananas, and strawberries.

3. Hire a Personal Trainer

Another great way to become healthier this year is to hire a personal trainer. Outside of diet, regular exercise is the biggest contributor to overall wellness. Unfortunately, only half of all Americans exercise regularly.

There is a multitude of reasons why hiring a personal trainer can help you engage in physical activities on a regular basis. For example, personal trainers are great sources of motivation and they have the extensive knowledge and experience necessary to help you realize your specific fitness goals.

4. Meditate

Meditating has become immensely popular in the last decade – and for good reason. Many people report feeling more relaxed and less stressed after meditating. Meditation also:

  • Increases attention span;
  • Improves brain function;
  • Enhances metabolism;
  • Improves sleep;
  • Fights disease;
  • And prevents the signs of aging.

If you’re a teacher who wants to be as healthy and happy as possible, you should know that there are numerous strategies you can use to make it happen. Some of them include optimizing your diet, hiring a personal trainer, giving back to students, and meditating. By implementing a few or all of these wellness techniques, you will enjoy higher energy levels and a more positive outlook, both of which will make you a more effective instructor.
